Hello ladies, I’m Hannah Freese, a Registered Dietitian, and Certified Specialist in Weight Management I help women over 40 repair their damaged midlife metabolisms so that they can lose weight, achieve glowing health, and never stress about their weight again.

Today I am sharing the Top 3 Reasons You Should Be Doing “Dry January.”

Dry January is the term that describes the self-imposed abstinence from alcohol during the entire month of January.

And it’s a really great thing to do.

It’s great for your brain and preventing dementia, your skin for preventing wrinkles and puffiness, for your heart, for your organs, for your stress levels, for your everything!

Including your metabolism.  If you want to lose weight, you need to have a metabolism that can burn fat.

Alcohol damages metabolisms and blocks fat burning.

So when you do a 30-day fast from alcohol, your metabolism gets the needed time to do three very important things so that you can lose weight in January, February, March, etc.

Reason #1: Cleans Out Fatty Liver Deposits

The first reason you should be doing Dry January for your midlife metabolism is that detoxing from alcohol allows your liver to burn off stored fatty deposits in your liver. Which yes, are as gross and nasty as they sound. We never, ever want fatty deposits in our organs. That is very bad.

When we drink alcohol, our likelihood of packing fat into our liver increases dramatically.  And when we stop drinking alcohol long enough, our fatty deposits decrease dramatically.  So it’s very good to give your liver time to clean out.

Reason #2: Decreases Your Insulin Resistance

The second reason you should be doing Dry January for your midlife metabolism is that it decreases insulin resistance. Insulin is a very powerful weight-controlling hormone.  If you have insulin resistance, that is the backbone of metabolic damage.  So if you are having trouble losing weight because you have midlife metabolic damage, which will include a shade of insulin resistance, abstaining from alcohol will help you balance your insulin levels so that you can burn excess fat in your newly cleaned-out liver.

Reason #3: Helps You Make Better Food Choices

The third reason you should be doing Dry January for your midlife metabolism is that you are more likely to be able to stick with your new year's healthy habit plan. When you drink alcohol, it stays in your system for about 24 hours and drives cravings for sugar, flour, and caffeine.  If you are constantly craving sugar, flour, and junk, it makes it all but impossible to make the healthy food choices you want to make for yourself.

Never, ever underestimate the impact alcohol has on your brain and how it affects the choices you make.

Alright, everyone, Dry January is on!  From your head to your toes, giving up alcohol for 30 days is a great idea, especially if you are a woman over 40 trying to lose weight.
