Do You Have These Signs of Metabolic Damage?

Today we are talking about 5 big signs of metabolic damage so that you can assess yourself and see if your excess body weight is due to metabolic damage that can be fixed.

If you’ve not been in this group very long or are new to me, I specialize in repairing the broken metabolisms of post menopausal women.

So, how do you know if you have a broken metabolism or not?

Well today, I’ll lead you through some symptoms that will help you self identify as a woman with a healthy or broken metabolism.

Ready to go?

There are numerous symptoms of metabolic damage but for today, 5 will be sufficient for you to raise your hand and say Yes, that’s me!

First symptom:

  1. Hunger or obsession with food

If you cannot go over 6 hours without eating and start to get hangry, irritable, and totally crazy about food, then you have a damaged metabolism.

At the heart of a damaged metabolism is the inability to reach into your fat stores between meals and while you sleep and burn your excess body fat for fuel.

If you’re always hungry, always need snacks, always thinking about food, then you are living with metabolic damage.  You are trying to bring a pot of water to boil by burning match after match after match.

A healthy metabolism boils water like a gas stove.

It can go long times without being hungry, needing snacks, needing caffeine, needing food to function.  If you have failed past diet attempts because you were just too hungry, that diet was never going to work for you.  Because you have a broken metabolism and low-calorie diets like weight watchers don’t fix that.

Symptom #2:

  1. Waist over 35 inches

This one is pretty straightforward.  grab a tape measure or a a piece of string.  Wrap it around the biggest part of your middle.  If that circumference is more than 35” you have too much fat stored in and around your organs.  Which is a neon sign of metabolic damage.  The subcutaneous or fat just under the skin is not helping matters and having a waist over 35” is a risk factor for heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic diseases.

Symptom #3:

  1. Fasting Blood sugar over 99 mg/dL in the US or 6.0 mmol/L in Canada

This one is tough if you don’t have access to your lab numbers. But it’s a clear cut symptom of metabolic damage that you can watch improve so that you know that you are actually getting more healthy as you repair your metabolism.  The hallmark of metabolic damage is insulin resistance.  And if your blood sugar is high, your body is insulin resistant.

Here’s why that is bad:  Your body will work really really hard to keep your blood sugar in the Goldilocks zone. Not too high. Not too low.

To keep it not too high, your pancreas will release a lot of insulin to help drive the extra sugar into the cells.

When your insulin resistance, it takes more and more insulin to clear less and less sugar.

When you have a lot of insulin in your blood, you are in fat-accumulation mode.

So, you may even have good blood sugar numbers, around 88-95, but you’re keeping that number good at the expense of your weight.

The same insulin you need to keep good blood sugars is causing you to gain weight and blocking your attempts to lose it.

So, I would say while 99 and 6.0 are the cutoffs for pre-diabetes, by 88mg/dL I see women with metabolic damage and weight issues.

Symptom 4:

  1. Low energy

Having low amounts of energy, especially in the afternoon, is not just something that happens with age.

We don’t always just get more and more tired as we take trips around the sun.  Many women are able to keep up high levels of energy and clear minds because they have efficient and healthy metabolisms.

Low-energy is not a sign of aging, it’s a sign of metabolic damage.

Metabolic damage is an energy crisis, not a calorie crisis.  We only burn fat for energy. We only burn calories for energy.  Energy is at the heart of health.

If you are feeling slow, sluggish, fatigued, and drained, it’s probably not your thyroid and it’s not your age.

It’s your metabolism!  And this can be fixed and you can get back years of energy.

And now, symptom #5:

  1. Weight that won’t come off with diet and exercise.

If you have excess body weight and you don’t feel like you're eating that much. Or that you actually eat pretty healthy or that you work out a lot and still never see movement, that is a huge sign that you are suffering from a damaged metabolism.

If you have tried everything and nothing has worked, literally by deduction, you know that you have metabolic damage.

I see this all.the.time. Women who eat fairly well.  Women whose husbands tell them, they don’t know why they have weight problems because they barely eat anything at all.

Women who feel like they are doing all the right things but absolutely cannot drop any weight. Or drop the same 10 lbs every time.

This is metabolic damage.  This is when your mitochondria are damaged and not burning fat like they should and your metabolic hormones are all off balance and are blocking your mitochondria from burning any fat at all.

Alright, so how did you do?

You don’t need to have all 5 symptoms. One is enough to diagnose you with metabolic damage.

Just one of these symptoms helps you understand that the root problem of your weight problem is your metabolism.
