The Secret to Losing Belly Fat

Today we are asking the question, “What is the secret to losing belly fat?”

I think this question needs no introduction!

Belly fat seems like the toughest body fat to lose if you do the classic diet approach with eating less and exercising more.

I know this.

I tried this.

Many many many of us tried this.

So today I want to tell you the secret to burning belly fat.

So let’s dive in!

First thing you need to know is that your body is super cool.

It burns fat in a very specific order:

1. First, it will burn fat from inside your organs, specifically your pancreas and your liver.

This is very, very dangerous fat and we never, ever want fatty deposits in our organs. They were not meant to store fat and when our body runs out of room and is forced to start putting fat in the organs for storage we have a big problem. This is what many scientists think pushes us from just overweight into actual diabetes. The fat deposits in our pancreas.

So, if you have a metabolism that burns fat for fuel in a streamlined and efficient way like it was meant to do, your body will burn the fat in your organs first.

Which is good news for our health.

2. Second, our body will burn the fat around your organs.

This is called visceral fat. This fat wraps around our organs. You can’t really see it all the time and you can actually have a lot of visceral fat and have a flat tummy. But most of us with belly fat to lose have quite a bit of visceral fat wrapping around our organs.

This fat can raise your risk for serious health issues like heart disease, Alzheimer’s, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and high cholesterol.

So your body gets rid of that next.

3. Thirdly, we burn the fat under our skin.

Then the fat around our organs is reduced, then it will start really chipping away at the fat we see under our skin. That fat is called subcutaneous. Because it’s just under your skin.

This is what you see in the mirror.

This is what we call our muffin top.

This is what we really, really, really, really want to get rid of.

This is the belly fat most of us are talking about.

But one thing you may not know is that that belly fat has fat underneath it.

Our waist circumference isn’t just subcutaneous fat. Its our visceral fat too.

That visceral fat takes up space and adds to the thick feeling we have around our middles.

The real secret to getting rid of belly fat specifically, is to have to have a healthy metabolism that burns through your fat deposits in your organs, then your visceral fat, and then starts going after that subcutaneous fat.

Exercise doesn’t do this very efficiently.

Especially if you are doing abdominal strengthening exercises. That actually builds the muscle under and above the fat layers so you have an even thicker midsection.

Sit ups and pilates won’t burn belly fat. They will build muscle behind it.

Belly fat is burned through our eating. Not through exercise.

One more time because it’s super important.

Belly fat is burned with our eating habits, not with exercise.

Should you have a strong core? You bet!

But if you want a flat tummy or abs you can see, you have to burn the fat around the muscle. The muscle has to show through.

Belly fat after menopause is extra tough because your hormone changes are like air traffic control cops telling your body to store any and all your fat right in your tummy area!

When we had more estrogen, we would preferentially put that fat in our hips and thighs. But once we lose that protective estrogen, the androgens take over and we start to store fat more like men.

Your body’s ability to burn fat is based on what and when you eat as your control your fat-burning hormones.

So to really get rid of belly fat specifically, you need to have a metabolism that can burn fat efficiently and consistently enough to chew through your intra-organ fat and then through your visceral fat and then it will go to town on your subcutaneous fat.

That starts with controlling your hormones. And you control your hormones with what and when you eat.

Not supplements.

Not hot sauce.

Not apple cider vinegar.

Not dehydrating cleanses.

Not sit ups.

Not weight training.

You burn belly fat for energy by working with how your body works, not beating into submission.
