Knowledge is one thing. There’s lot’s of knowledge on the internet.

But we are still overwhelmed and confused on what to do. And even if we do know what to do, like “eat natural fat for breakfast,” why can’t we do it consistently and well? Why can’t we keep ourselves motivated for more than 2-4 weeks?

Can you remember a time, maybe a diet, maybe not, when you knew what to do, but you just didn’t do it?

Let’s break it down into its three parts: Personal + Expert + Coaching

Personal, meaning, they know you.

They know your name, they know your medical and diet history, they know who you’re cooking for at home. They know what your biggest struggle in losing weight is.

They know you’re allergic to salmon or don’t like to cook.

This is crucial because we are all different. We all have different lives. Maybe I can cook at home, maybe you can’t. Maybe I’ve have a metabolism lower than death valley from years of Weight Watchers and maybe you don’t.

If the strategy can’t be personalized, it will be discarded.

If the changes in your eating can’t be modified or adapted to your life, then you will totally do that thing where you use willpower to make huge sweeping changes only to burn out and give up three weeks later.

Right?

The support must be personal. Not canned. Not a sound bite.

If you’ve tried a diet or weight loss program in the past that didn’t have a coach that helped you pivot or adapt the program to your personally, you are literally trying to shove a life right on top of yours.

Picture this.

You are standing there in the mirror, holding up your new eating lifestyle "outfit."

Right? It’s perfect, it’s clean, it’s all the things.

But you are already wearing clothes. Maybe you don’t like the clothes, but it doesn’t matter, you’re already wearing them. Reading a diet book or doing a weight loss program that isn’t personal is like just forcing the whole outfit on over the one you’re wearing.

And that doesn’t feel good. It too hot. It’s too tight. You can’t button it up by yourself. Your stretching it out, hoping it doesn’t just pop off.

Having a personal coach helps you say, “hey, this new shirt fits awesome, I’ll take the old one off, and put the new one on. But these new shoes… I don’t think they fit. They're just too small. There’s nothing wrong with them, they're just too small. "

Then your coach comes in and says, "oh, let’s try these shoes on instead. There, that fits better and you’re still looking great in the outfit. Those are shoes you can wear for years."

Have you tried to force someone else's diet program into your life and it just didn’t fit?

Expert, meaning, they know science. They know metabolisms. They are trained and qualified to be giving out information. They have studied chemistry and biology, at an expert level.

Choosing someone qualified to trust is important and there should be a solid trail of evidence of their expertise behind them.

I’m not going to beat this one to death, but just because someone has a pretty website or followers on Instagram, doesn’t make them a nutritionist.

Just because someone sells supplements, does not make them a metabolic expert.

I think the difference between an expert and not an expert is the ability to critically think quickly to problem solve because they have experience with the problem and they’ve failed before.

If you haven’t failed and then succeeded, then you don’t really understand what happening.

If you haven’t been in the trenches and dealt with tragic failure and then risen from the ashes, you’re probably just copying someone else.

Mimicry doesn’t make you an expert.

Reading and consuming information doesn’t make you an expert.

When I first started my journey into weight loss for women over 40, it was a disaster. I almost quit. I had to fail many times, with real consequences before I was able to break through and develop a deep, holistic understanding of women's metabolisms.

I could not just copy other people anymore. I had to earn my seat at the table to call myself an expert.

Coaching as in, they help you graciously continue to grow and make progress using motivational techniques, positive accountability, and gentle but firm pressure to move you forward in something that you have trouble moving forward in yourself.

  • A coach doesn’t just tell you what to do. A coach helps you do it.
  • A coach helps you grow personally into a better version of yourself.
  • A coach is the the seasoned guide has walked the journey before you.

A coach is Yoda to Luke Skywalker. Yoda didn’t force Luke to follow rules, he taught him how to grow as a person and become a jedi himself. He didn’t say, copy me and just follow the rules and you’ll win!

Coaches help you be more of who you are not more of who they are.

Coaches help you be the hero of your story.

In weight loss coaches help you:

  • Illuminate the bigger picture when you can’t see it
  • Encourage you and make you feel good about yourself when you don’t feel good about yourself
  • Push you farther than you would have gone yourself.

One note on this… your husband is not your coach. Your husband is not your accountability partner. Let your husband be your husband. Let your nutritionist be you're nutritionist.
